DATES FOR YOUR DIARY -o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o- AUGUST 2008 Supper & Opera One of our favourite venues of the summer and last year’s improvements to the theatre have made it even better. Tchaikovsky’s one act opera was his last, and whilst not as often performed as some of his others has some great tunes and dramatic moments. The opera will be preceded by a new classically inspired contemporary dance piece. Supper & Prom Nikolai Lugansky, one of Russia’s great pianists, will perform one of Her greatest piano Concertos, Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 3. The rest of the programme features two Finnish works, the UK premiere of Magnus Lindberg’s Seht die Sonnen and Sibelius’ Symphony No 1 SEPTEMBER 2008 Summer Soiree Do try and join us for a late summer soirée at member Chris’ delightful apartment in Wavendon near Milton Keynes. There will be time for a stroll around the lake and, of course, good music, good food and good company. Supper & Concert Andris Nelsons’ first concert as music director of the CBSO should mark the start of a really special collaboration. Tonight we will be treated to music by Wagner, Bartók and Berlioz. Berlioz wrote his Symphony Fantastique when he was only 27, a staggering achievement OCTOBER 2008 Supper & Concert John Eliot Gardiner and his orchestra, accompanied by the outstanding Monteverdi choir, explore the roots from which Brahms drew his inspiration – a capella folk songs by a wide range of composers. The programme culminates with his Third Symphony. Opera in Florence For our tenth European Opera trip we are visiting Florence for a performance of Puccini's Tosca. We will also have a tour of this fabulous city including the Uffizi gallery. Supper & Concert An evening of Russian music performed by some outstanding Russian musicians. Natalia Gutman will interpret Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No 1 with its massive, tempestuous cadenza. The evening draws to a close with Tchaikovsky’s emotional masterpiece The Pathétique Symphony. Supper & Concert The young British violinist Charles Siem will perform Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No 1 with its deeply spiritual passacaglia. The third movement of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 4 features the famous passage for plucked strings. NOVEMBER 2008 Supper & Ballet Mark Morris returns to the Barbican for an historic new production of Romeo and Juliet set to Prokofiev’s original score. With a radically different ending to today’s well known version, the score has never before been performed as the composer intended. Supper & Opera The comfortable and easy to get to Milton Keynes Theatre is the perfect venue to enjoy Glyndebourne’s acclaimed production of Bizet’s extraordinary and passionate Carmen, which should not be missed. Supper & Concert The programme starts with music by Purcell and Haydn. Then we will have John Lill’s performance of Beethoven’s infectiously lively Piano Concerto No 1. The final piece, Beethoven’s Symphony No 1 clearly shows the influence that Haydn had on the young composer.
